While studying at Cambridge Paul travelled to London to study conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. On arrival at the RCM he studied conducting with Norman del Mar and, as part of his repetiteur studies in the Opera School, studied conducting with Richard Austin.

As Head of Keyboard and then Director of Music of Bryanston, he conducted all the school choirs and orchestras in a wide-ranging choral and orchestral repertoire. He also directed the Choral Society in a large repertoire which included Carmina Burana, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis and Elgar's Dream of Gerontius. In addition the chorus sang a number of songs from Musicals arranged by Paul for chorus and full orchestra.

In addition to these Bryanston ensembles Paul has directed the Blandford Music Week Singers and Blandford Festival Chorus, the Dorset Guild of Singers, the Dorset County Orchestra, the Milton Abbey Festival and the Bournemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

He has been Musical Director of a number of operas and musicals, among them The Magic Flute, West Side Story, Kiss me Kate, Oklahoma, The Boyfriend, Anything Goes and Fiddler on the Roof.
